Space Trip

By Tracy

Come away to a far away place

Where beautiful stars in the Milky Way race.

There is a solar system to explore

Full of planets galore.

As we start our space trip

We see a lot of craters

We also see the flaming sun.

Earth is wet. Venus is dry.

Venus is super duper hot.

And Earth can be hot

Earth has oxygen and it has mostly water.

People live on Earth.

Jupiter

by Tracy

Enormous, jumbo like

Immense, colossal

Fifth from the sun

Barely visible rings

Has seventeen moons

A Riddle

by Tracy

I’m hot like fire.

I am a big, fat, ball of gas.

I am a star that gives off light.

I am really, really, really, really, really bright.

Who am I?

The Sun

Space Journey

by Max

Come with me to a far away planet

Where comets shoot towards the Milky Way

There is a solar system to explore

Full of planets galore.

As we start our space journey

We see a lot of craters

Mercury orbits around the sun very fast

But it rotates slowly.

Wouldn’t it be fun to explore

Venus which we really can’t

And we can’t explore Mercury

But Earth we can explore.

Riddle

I am 93 million miles away from the Earth.

I am hot as fire,

I am a star. I am a fat ball of gas. I am very immense.

I keep the Earth lighted.

But when I turn away from the Earth, it is dark.

What am I?

Exploring the Solar System

by Julianne G

Come with me to a really cool place

There is a solar system to explore

With planets galore

Let’s start our solar system tour

Mercury is such a rocky planet.

Anyway that’s what I read.

If by chance we go too far

We’ll pass Pluto and its moon, Charon.

Now let’s go to Venus and Earth

Venus is surrounded by deadly gases and is very dry

Earth has oxygen and is mostly wet.

Now let’s explore and find some more

There is Mercury.

I think I see one more. There goes Neptune…

Now let’s explore and find some more.

Mars is called the red planet.

Here comes Jupiter.

Jupiter has the  Great Red Spot

Its the largest plant

In our solar system.

Saturn has rings made of ice, rock, and dirt or dust.

Uranus looks like it’s tipped on its side.

There goes Neptune with its Great Blue Spot

Pluto with its moon Charon is the last planet.

What Am I?

By Julianne G

I am 93 million  miles away from the Earth.

(That’s about 150 million km.)

1000 Earths could fit inside of it.

My name is Jupiter.

If you see a Great Red Spot

Then that’s Jupiter

I wonder if it’s hot

It has barely- visible rings

A thick  atmosphere too.

It is 483,6000,000 miles from the sun.

Saturn

A Journey to Our Solar System

         by Christiana B

Come with me to our solar system.

There’s a whole bunch of planets to explore.

As we start our solar system journey

I see planet Mercury.

That’s a hot and rocky planet.

Venus is dry and Earth is wet.

Venus has deadly gases. It is the hottest planet.

Earth has mostly water and less land.

If we go too far

We’ll miss Pluto and its moon Charon.

Venus

by Christiana B

Venus is the second planet next to the sun and  it is 67 million miles away from the sun. It doesn’t have any satellites. Venus’s atmosphere has a lot of carbon dioxide gases on it. It never rains on Venus because it is too hot for rain to form.

Planets Galore

Mercury, Mercury

Lead me to the place

Where Venus gives off deadly gases.

Venus, Venus lead me to the place

Where Mars is rocky.

Jupiter, Jupiter lead me to the place

Where Earth is.

Earth, Earth,

Lead me to the place

Where Saturn has beautiful rings.

Saturn, Saturn,

Take me to the place

Where Uranus plays.

Summarizing a story via a poem was a common practice but not the only activity. Prior to writing the following poetry, the class enjoyed listening and reading poetry from day one. They often used the rhythm of their favorite poems to summarize a story.

After we read about each planet, some students went to the public library and brought in books to share about the Solar System.

Next, we reread Fireflies, Fireflies, Light by Jonathan London Ill. by Linda Messier.

“Fireflies, fireflies, light my way.

Lead me to the place...

Where turtles play.

Turtles, turtles, dive so deep.

Lead me to the place...”

etc.

It was London’s rhythm and structure that some of the children used to write a poem about the planets.

When reading/studying the planets a list of characteristics were listed on a large chart for each planet. We made a list of juicy adjectives that were met in the readings. Those words in turn were embellished with the use of the Thesaurus. Before writing began we reviewed the list of characteristics of each planet.

Poem of the Jungle

Unknown author

A good spring board for new ideas:

“Come with me to far away

Where the leopard loves to play.

There’s a jungle to explore

Full of animals galore

As we start our jungle walk,

We will hear a parrot squawk.

Parrot’s such a noisy bird.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve heard.

If by chance we walk to far,

We’ll come to where the lions are.

Instead of roaring, this one’s snoring.

Oh, what fun to go exploring!

We’ll hear frogs croaking as we go.

Some leap high and some leap low.

It will be fun, don’t you agree,

With all these animals to see?

If we look up very high,

We will see the jungle sky.

Butterflies fly here and there,

Like bright petals in the air.

If we see a  big green smile,

It might be a crocodile.

If that croc asks you to play,

Reply, “Perhaps another day.”

If we look down to the floor,

We’ll see beetles, bugs, and more.

They run quickly to and fro,

Going where bugs like to go.

If we start to feel too hot,

We can find a place that’s hot.

Elephant will keep us cool,

Splashed by water in his pool.

At last we’ll have to say “GOODBYE!”

We’ll wave to tigers we pass by

Oh, won’t you come to far away

On a jungle holiday?”

Trickster Tale

By Christiana

One sunny summer morning, Monkey and Mouse wanted to have a race in the forest to see who could run the fastest. On Monday they met each other. Then they started to race but Mouse tricked the Monkey. Mouse pretended to have an asthma attack.  Monkey stopped, “Are you OK?” asked Monkey? “No,” said Mouse weakly. Take me to the closest cave and lay me down. You can leave me there alone,” said Mouse. Monkey went to the river to get some water for Mouse. Mouse raced ahead. Then Mouse won the race.

The Lion and the Monkey

By Max T.

One summer day in Africa, a lion rose in the sun. A monkey was swinging in the tree. The lion wanted to eat that monkey, the monkey looked so good to eat. Then the lion said, “Hey Monkey, want to go race to that fruit?”  “Sure!” said Monkey.

They started to race. The monkey tricked the lion. He knew there was a short cut to the fruit tree. He went through the short-cut, grabbed the fruit, and swung back to the tree. “The trick worked!” said Monkey

One sunny day in the backyard of a tall house lived a fat squirrel and a brown and black spotted dog. On the longest day of summer squirrel came while Dog was getting a bath. Squirrel wanted a laugh. Squirrel jumped in and splashed dog’s owner. Dog’s owner got angry and banished Dog from the backyard. Dog said, “It is not my fault!”  “Why should I believe you?” his owner asked. Squirrel chuckled.

Mouse and Lion

by Brad T.,

In a meadow lived a mouse. One summer day a lion saw the mouse. “Look how much meat!” said the lion.  “I know where there’s lots of meat. Meet me at the lake,” said Mouse. So the lion went home to sleep.

So the next day they met at the lake. Mouse made a shadow puppet the shape of meat. The lion dove in the water to eat it. He drowned and Mouse lived happily ever after.

Rat and Cat

by Tracy

Once upon a time in the cool meadow lived a rat and a cat. They never got along. But one day Rat found a big apple tree. Cat saw the tree. They got in a fight about who would get the top and who would get the bottom. Finally they figured it out. Cat would get the top of the apple tree and Rat would get the bottom.  They planted their part. After awhile Cat came back and said, “Rat, my tree won’t grow and yours is growing. You cheated me! How can I punish you? By throwing you in the lake or by putting you on the top of the mountain?”

Rat said, “Anything. Just don’t put me in the hole!”

“I’ll put you in the hole,” said Cat.

“Did you know my real home is the hole?? Asked Rat.

“Oh drats !“ said Cat. “Now I can’t eat him” Cat said, “Rats!” and for the rest of the year Cat left Rat alone.

The end.

Anansi and Turtle

By Brad C

One day Anansi was in a banana and was eating it. Turtle came to eat. Anansi saw him and started to talk. Turtle was scared so he took it to the water but before he could take it under the water, he saw Anansi and yelled, “You scared me! Now what should I do? Should I put thorns in your bed or should I kill you?” “Do anything but please, oh please, don’t put me  in a web,” said Anansi.

“Then I will put you in a web!” said Turtle.

Anansi and the Turtle

By Julianne

One hot day by the lake Anansi was hungry and climbed into a banana. Turtle was swimming in the lake by the banana trees. He went to the tree to get some bananas but before he could get there, he heard a voice. .It was coming from the bananas.

Anansi said, “Don’t eat me! Don’t eat me!.” I don’t taste good!” Turtle was very surprised. “I should bring this to the prince,” said Turtle. So he started down the road..

When he bumped into Monkey.  Monkey asked, “Where  are you going with that banana?”

“I am going to bring it to the prince,” said Turtle.

“But the prince has millions of bananas why are you bringing it to the prince?” said Monkey.”

“But this is a talking banana!” said Turtle.

They also ran into Mouse, Cat, and Dog. Finally they made it to the prince. “What is this?” asked the prince.

“This is a talking banana!” said Turtle.

“That’s  ridiculous!” laughed the prince.

“Ridiculous!” shouted all the animals. So the prince cut the banana to see if anything was inside. There was Anansi. The prince was surprised. “A spider?!” screamed the prince. “I hate spiders!”

“Nothing to be afraid of. I’m harmless,” said Anansi.

He made friends with Anansi and put her back in a tree.

Anansi and Rabbit

                 by Tracy

One sunny summer day in the field, Anansi the spider was looking down in Rabbit’s garden looking at the red ripe apple.  Anansi was much too lazy to grow  them himself.  When Rabbit went in to take a nap, Anansi found something sharp and bored a hole in the apple and went in. When Rabbit woke up she went outside  and Anansi said, “Rabbit, let’s play a game like Monoply.”  The end.
